Preservatives: Preservatives, whether chemical or natural, are meant to protect the other ingredients of the product from going bad. They are typically needed for products that are water-based.
Surfactants: Surfactants are used to clean, degrease, and emulisfy. Chemical based surfactants can be too harsh on the skin, and actually ridoff essential fatty acids.
Fragrance: A catch-all term for any chemical which adds an aroma to a product. These are often synthetic or highly processed chemicals. However, natural fragrances derived from essential oils can actually provide aromatherapy benefits.
